Oma didn't have recipes for anything so I followed her around and made notes while she made this years ago.
Ingredients
8-10 apples, peeled and sliced 1/4"
2 1/3 c flour
2 T butter +3/4 c. butter
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 c warm water
1 c sour cream
1 c sugar
2 t cinnamon
1 c milk
Directions
Cut 2 T butter into flour. Add egg and mix in with fork (or hands). Add water and knead about 5 minutes until the dough is no longer sticky. Divide into 2 balls and place on lightly floured plate. Sprinkle with water and cover with tea towel. Let rest 1 hour. Peel and slice apples. Sprinkle flour on counter top. Roll out dough until it's about the size of pie crust. Stretch dough gently with back of hands until it's almost see through. Lay on tea towel sprinkled with flour and stretch until it's a rectangle about 13" (as long as a 9x13" pan). Spread 1/2 c sour cream over dough. Cover with half of the apples. Combine 1/2 c sugar and 1 t cinnamon and sprinkle over apples. Lift edge of tea towel to roll dough over so edges overlap. Place (seam side down) lengthwise in buttered (or sprayed) 9x13" pan. Pinch ends together to seal. Repeat with second ball of dough. Spread butter lightly over top of strudels. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Pour 1/2 c milk over the strudel and bake 15 more minutes. Pour 1/2 c milk over and bake 45 minutes or more until lightly browned. Serve warm or room temp. Keep in frig. Freezes well.
