Ingredients

2 1/2 c flour

1 T. baking powder

1/2 t. salt

1 stick butter, cut up into small pieces

1/3 c sugar (plus some to sprinkle on top)

2/3 c milk

1 c of whatever you want to add to the scones:  raisins, chocolate chips, dried cherries . . . (I usually split the dough and make 2 kinds.  Grandpa always preferred the raisin; Grandma the chocolate chip.

Directions

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt.  Use a pastry blender or a fork to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until it's granulated.  Add sugar and toss with fork to mix.  Add milk and stir with fork until dough forms.  Turn it out onto a board or the counter top. (If you're making two types, divide dough in half.)  Add raisins (or whatever) and shape into ball.  Knead 10-12 times until dough is holding together.  Divide dough into 4 balls.  Pat into 5 inch circles.  Sprinkle with sugar.  (I sprinkle with cinnamon too when I'm using raisins or cherries.)  Cut each circle into 8 wedges.  Bake slightly apart on baking sheet at 425 for 8-10 minutes.  (These freeze really well.)
